Melvin A. Evans
Melvin A. Evans, 90, a longtime resident of Okmulgee, died Monday, February 23, 2004 in Okmulgee. Services are 10:30a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Jeff Cranton officiating. Interment will follow in the Beggs Cemetery under the direction of the Shurden-Kelley Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
Mr. Evans was born on Thursday, October 30, 1913 to Tom and Ludie (Morrow) Evans in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. On October 20, 1934, he married Myrtle A. (Wiggins) in Okmulgee County. He worked as a carpentry teacher for Oklahoma State Tech for 19 years. After teaching he formed Evans Construction with his son, Eddie in 1963 which still operates in Okmulgee today.
He was a member of the Methodist Church in Morris; Okmulgee Masonic Lodge #199 A.F. & A. M.; McAlester Scottish Rite; a life member of the Okmulgee Elks Lodge; and the Carpenters Union for 69 years.
He was preceded in death by wife, Myrtle A. Evans on March 6, 2003; and one son, Melvin Warren Evans in 1939.
Survivors include one son, Eddie Evans of Okmulgee; one daughter, Timmie Garis and husband, Dr. John of Okmulgee; one sister, Orila Marchant of Okmulgee; four grandchildren, Terry Mabrey and husband, John of Okmulgee, J.C. Tipton III, and wife, Jennifer of Newhall, California, Eddie Evans, Jr. and wife, Patty of Spring, Texas, and Edie Williamson and husband, Tommy of Tulsa; eleven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Eddie Evans, Jr., J.C. Tipton III, Tommy Williamson, John Mabrey, Dr. John Garis, Kenneth Butler.
The family requests that memorials be made in his name to the Okmulgee Humane Society, 609 East 13th Street, Okmulgee, OK 74447.
