Rev. Samuel Jonathan Jones,
born January 31, 1913 at Columbus,
Mississippi to Rev. and Mrs. Stonewall Jones.
Departed this life August 11, 1972. He moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma with his father at the age of 3 years.
Attended school there and at Langston University, Langston, Oklahoma.
At an early age he professed hope in Christ. Moving to Coffeyville, Kansas 44 years ago, he married Fern Austin June 25, 1937.
Placing the value of the soul above the body, character above circumstance he was called to the ministry in 1947. By continual obedience to the call of duty, he accepted the pastorate at St. John Baptist Church, Independence, Kansas where he served with wisdom, courage and patience for 27 years.
His parents, one aunt Coretha Stewart, Okmulgee, OK; one uncle Jackson "Jack" Jones Okmulgee, OK; four sisters Wilda L. Jones Byas, Okmulgee, OK; Rosetta Jones Bradford, Tulsa, OK; Clara Mae Jones and Lillierene Jones and three brothers his
twin Nathaniel Jonathan Jones Sr, Okmulgee, OK; Stonewall Jones Jr., Tulsa, OK; and Schofield Jones, Washington, DC proceeded him in death. Survivors include the widow of the home, one daughter, Wanda Knox, Tacoma, Washington, four grandchildren, one aunt five nephews, one niece, a host of other relatives and many, many friends.
