A Time to Be Born
Lawrence E. McCurdy was born on May 25, 1943 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Richard McCurdy Sr. and Florine McCurdy. He was the third of five children
A Time to Plant
As a child, he was a member of Shorter Chapel AME Church. Okmulgee, Oklahoma. As a resident of Houston, he became a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. Upon the move to Tulsa, Oklahoma, he became a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. There, Mac devoted a lot of time to the youth of the church including sponsoring youth camps and mentoring. Mac was paralyzed during heart surgery; subsequently he relocated back to Houston, Texas and became a member of Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Unable to attend church because of physical disabilities, he nevertheless was a friend and counselor to many.
A Time to Build
Mac graduated Dunbar High School in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. He attended Okmulgee Technical Institute and Texas Southern University. In college he was selected for the All American Football Team. He continued his football career by playing in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs and in the CFL. After football, Mac pursued several career paths. He worked for Cameron iron Works but his favorite career was entrepreneur. Mac opened his barbeque restaurant, serving some of the best barbecue in the South, in his free time, he was Coach McCurdy. He was a volunteer Little League Football coach.
A Time to Love
He married Opal Constance Johnson. They had two children, Michael and Sonya.
A Time to Die
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard McCurdy Sr., his brother, Richard McCurdy Jr., and his grandson, Baby Mike.
